Black Friday travels deals have returned after a two-year absence, with some bargains available to South Africans looking for an island getaway.
Discounted international flights, accommodation, and holiday packages have been absent from the Black Friday promotional period for the past two years due to pandemic-induced travel restrictions. This year, airlines and travel agencies are offering discounts for holidays in 2023 and into 2024.
For most of the two years spent under lockdown, South Africans were restricted from visiting popular island destinations. Now, trips to Zanzibar, Mauritius, Seychelles, and Maldives are being promoted during Black Friday.
Flight Centre is offering nearly 40 island holiday packages, ranging from R13,000 per person for a trip to Zanzibar to R51,990 for a getaway in the Maldives.

This package, at a saving of R4,340 per person, according to Flight Centre, is for travel between 16 May and 30 June 2023.
South African holidaymakers can also pick up a trip to Mauritius for under R15,000 per person through Flight Centre’s Black Friday promotion. The 5 nights stay at the 4-star Mythic Suites & Villas, situated in a picturesque village in the northeast of the island, comes with return flights and continental breakfast daily. It also includes a Mauritian-style welcome dinner and “homemade rum tasting”, 25% off lunch, and 10% off dinner, for a grand saving of R6,530, according to Flight Centre.
A holiday in Seychelles, complete with 7 nights’ accommodation in a superior room at Club Med, is on offer for R40,260 per person sharing from Travelstart. This package, for travel in April 2023, includes three full meals per day with table wines, local beer, and mineral drinks. It also includes an open bar.
